The Merchant of Venice, with its celebrated and moving passages, remains one of Shakespeare’s most beautiful plays.

Depending on whom you ask, it also remains one of his most repulsive.
Was Shakespeare being anti-Semitic, or was he merely exploring anti-Semitism?

Friday's Child - Austin Hawkins

Friday’s Child is from the pen of local playwright Austin Hawkins. Austin’s one act plays have won a clutch of awards in recent years in theatre festivals for actors, directors and for his original scripts, including ‘Runner Up’ in a National play writing competition.

In this three act play ‘Friday’s Child‘, Alan and Mary Hurst are predictably going about their lives, he an insurance executive and magistrate, and Mary a ‘pillar of the community’, playing bridge, in the Townswomen’s Guild and doing charitable works.

Returning from the office one evening Alan has a chance encounter with a young sex worker, Sharon, and agrees to go back to her flat. Their meeting triggers a chain of unwelcome revelations as Sharon, Alan and Mary have their settled lives challenged and face a catalyst for change.
Hang on to your seats as the verbal sparks start to fly!
